Introduction
What TurboDL is and how its parts fit together.
TurboDL is a multi-threaded download manager in the spirit of IDM, written in Rust. It splits every file into segments downloaded in parallel, pauses and resumes without losing anything, and sorts your files by category.
What TurboDL contains
| Part | Program | What for |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop app | turbodl | Filterable list, queue, per-thread details, settings, statistics, themes, three languages, updates |
| Command line | turbodl-cli | Scripts and servers, driven by JSON profiles |
| MCP server | turbodl-mcp | Downloads driven by an AI assistant |
| Extensions | Chrome, Firefox | Send the browser's downloads to the app |
The three programs share the same engine: a download behaves the same everywhere.
How it speeds things up
- A first request (
Range: bytes=0-0) reveals the file size and whether the server accepts byte ranges. - The file is split into as many segments as threads (8 by default, up to 32).
- When a segment finishes before the others, its connection takes over half of the largest remaining segment: no connection stays idle until the end.
Note
If the server does not support byte ranges, TurboDL downloads in a single stream and warns you that resuming will not be possible.
