Updates

How the app finds, downloads and installs a new version.

Detection

At startup (unless Settings → General → Updates is turned off), TurboDL reads the list of published versions, the same one as the Downloads page, and compares the newest with its own version. The refresh button of the toolbar checks on demand.

Only official releases are offered: nightly builds are never installed automatically, and an official release replaces a nightly of the same version.

When a newer version exists, a dialog shows its number and a link to the downloads page. Choose:

  • Download and install;
  • Later: the dialog closes and a green Update x.y.z button stays in the toolbar to come back to it.

Download

The package for your platform (turbodl-<version>-windows-x64.zip or turbodl-<version>-linux-x64.tar.gz) is downloaded by TurboDL's own engine, with progress and speed, into the updates/ folder of the configuration directory. It can be cancelled at any time.

The download is checked against its published SHA-256 checksum before anything is installed.

Installation and file replacement

  1. The archive is extracted with tar (built into Windows 10 and later, and into every Linux).
  2. Every file of the package (turbodl, turbodl-cli, turbodl-mcp, default.profile.json, profile.schema.json, README.md, LICENSE, NOTICE) replaces the one next to the running turbodl:
    • the installed file is first renamed to <name>.old (a running program cannot be overwritten on Windows, but it can be renamed);
    • the new file is then copied in place;
    • if any step fails, every file is put back as it was and the error is shown.
  3. The archive and the extracted files are deleted.
  4. Restart now closes the app (running downloads are paused cleanly) and starts the new version. The .old files are deleted at that next start.

Your settings, download list, profiles and history live in the configuration directory, not next to the program: they are never touched.

Warning

If TurboDL is installed in a folder you cannot write to (for example C:\Program Files without administrator rights), the installation fails without changing anything. Download the new version from the Downloads page instead, or move TurboDL to a folder of your own.

Platforms without a package

On a platform without a published package, the dialog only offers the link to the downloads page.
