Browser extensions
Installing and using the Chrome and Firefox extensions.
The extensions catch the browser's downloads and hand them over to TurboDL through native messaging. Only the declared extension can talk to the app: no network port is opened.
Requirements
Install the extension from your browser's store (below), then start the turbodl app once: it registers the com.turbodl.host native host for Chrome and Firefox (Windows registry, or files in ~/.config/google-chrome, ~/.config/chromium and ~/.mozilla on Linux). The state is shown in Settings → Browser.
If the store is not reachable
When the store is not reachable, or has not approved the latest version yet, install the extension by hand with the packages of the Browser extensions section of the Downloads page. Each zip holds a README.txt with the steps below. The app's Settings → Browser links to this page.
Chrome (and Chromium)
Install it from the Chrome Web Store.
Manual install (Chrome, Chromium, Edge, Brave), with turbodl-chrome-<version>.zip:
- Extract it into a folder you keep: the browser loads the extension from there.
- Open
chrome://extensions(edge://extensionsin Edge) and turn on Developer mode. - Load unpacked → choose the folder that holds
manifest.json.
The extension ID is fixed, even unpacked: feiobddkmdahnnjdpnofhgpocpeioejg (the only one the app accepts). To update, extract the new zip into the same folder, then click the reload arrow of TurboDL in chrome://extensions.
Firefox
Install it from Firefox Add-ons.
Manual install, with the files of the Downloads page:
- Permanent: open
turbodl-firefox-<version>.xpi(signed by Mozilla) with Firefox, or drag it onto a Firefox window. - Temporary, with
turbodl-firefox-<version>.zip(removed when Firefox closes): extract it, openabout:debugging#/runtime/this-firefox, Load Temporary Add-on → choosemanifest.json.
ID: [email protected].
Usage
- Automatic: every http(s) download started in the browser is paused, sent to TurboDL with the Referer, the User-Agent and, if Send the site's cookies is on, the site's cookies, then removed from the browser.
- Right-click a link → "Download with TurboDL".
- Popup: state of the connection to the app, an Open TurboDL button, and the options:
- Capture downloads: switch the capture on or off;
- "Download with TurboDL" in the right-click menu: show or hide the menu entry;
- Leave files smaller than (MB) to the browser: 0 captures every file (files of unknown size are always captured);
- Send the site's cookies: off by default. Turning it on asks for access to all sites, which the browser requires to read the cookies of the file's site; needed for files that require you to be signed in;
- Links not to capture: regular expressions, one per line (for example
\.torrent$); invalid lines are reported under the field.
Tip
If TurboDL does not answer, the download resumes in the browser: nothing is lost. A red "!" shows on the icon for a few seconds.
If the app is closed, the native host starts it before passing on the link.
